ÎÞÓÇÊÓƵ Alumni Interviews
HMC offers interview with our senior interviewers and our alumni. HMC strictly offers virtual interviews as a way to level the playing field for our applicants who otherwise would not be able to visit HMC in-person. We also provide our prospective students with a list of our interview questions ahead of time for this same reason. We suggest taking a look at what prospective students and families know about interviews at HMC prior to embarking on your interview journey.
Here are 5 key takeaways about HMC’s interview process:
- Interviews are strictly online and are optional.
- A 30-minute interview helps our office get a sense of fit for the student. It’s also an excellent opportunity for the student to learn more about HMC from someone in our community.
- The interview is not a test. In fact, we hope the conversation feels natural and the student can feel like themself.
- For most students, the interview is the most extensive 1-on-1 contact they have with the College. We hope it confirms their best impressions of us and leaves them energized about HMC, even if they realize we’re not their best fit. Students tend to share their impressions with friends, family, teachers and staff at school. It’s important they walk away feeling positive about the interaction, regardless of the outcome.
- Lastly, our data suggests students who interview are noticeably more likely to enroll than those who don’t.
Note: At this time, we do not accept requests for Alumni Interviews by students living and attending high school outside of the United States. We are cautious about publicly offering these opportunities given the high demand abroad and the (often extreme) selectivity of our international applicant pool.
Why we need your help?
With a staff of 7 counselors and even with the help of 8 senior interns, we simply can’t keep up with the demand for interviews. So we turn to you, our alumni; ambassadors of the College with first-hand experience and perspective of Harvey Mudd’s amazing academic program and community.
As an Alum Interviewer, you will offer at least two 20- to 30-minute interviews and submit written evaluations for any assigned and completed by January 10. Continue reading for additional details, or (and read the rest later)!
