We are upgrading the audio visual systems in the Shanahan center

Share story

As you may have experienced directly, the AV systems in Shanahan have been showing their age during the Fall semester,聽 often interrupting the smooth flow of your teaching and learning activities.聽 聽In partnership with our AV support vendor,聽 Spinitar, we have begun the work to fix the situation. Fortunately, we were able to obtain funding and plan for two very big pieces of work during the winter break.聽

First, we’re replacing 14 ceiling boxes that house the AV devices.聽 The original boxes were poorly designed, too small and without ventilation, which has caused lots of intermittent issues such as cables being crimped and devices overheating and failing.聽 The new boxes are designed to house AV equipment and are properly ventilated.聽

Here are the rooms getting new ceiling boxes:

2425, 3481, 2450, 2454, 3461, 2460, 2421, 3421, B450 and B454

聽Second, we’re replacing 21 projectors in the first two weeks of January,聽 and one of them is the center projector in 1430 (Lecture Hall).聽 These projector upgrades should also reduce AV problems.聽 The new projectors use lasers;聽 we鈥檙e saying goodbye to replacing bulbs that have gone dim, exploded or otherwise misbehaved.聽 Projectors are being installed as follows:

2 new projectors: 2421, 2425, 2440,听2460, 2465, 3460, 3465,

3 new projectors:聽3481, 叠460,听1430

During the week of January 9, we will also be doing firmware upgrades and preventative maintenance on the Crestron system, which is聽 used to control all of the projectors, lights and screens.聽

The above is the first phase of our work.聽 We have requested funding for fiscal 23-24 (July 23) to replace the Crestron control system, so we anticipate that we may still see some issues during the Spring 23 semester, while we continue to use the old system.聽 聽Nevertheless, we are happy to report this progress!
