Molly Stoykovich has been an academic administrative assistant for 22 years, providing clerical and logistical support for the Department of Biology. She鈥檚 an avid reader and gardener, and she has a superpower. Find out what it is and more in this Q-and-A.
What is your favorite part about your job and why?
Several years ago, my family went through a significant health scare that lasted for years. I refer to this time as the 鈥渄ark days.鈥 I felt helpless and chaotic in my personal life, with little control over what was happening. The only comfort I found was at work. Stepping into the biology office provided a sense of warmth and control. I had the support of outstanding colleagues, and I am deeply grateful for working in this department.
What is your favorite hobby, activity or creative outlet?
Anyone who knows me well knows that I鈥檓 an avid gardener. Our wonderful Southern California climate and living on a large property allow me to maintain a year-round garden, which I utilize to my advantage. Aside from my grandchildren and fur babies, nothing brings me more joy than propagating various seed varieties of my favorite fruits and vegetables, harvesting them and preserving them. I鈥檓 also starting to raise chickens.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and how would you use it at work?
I do have a superpower, and I have a coffee mug that says so. I鈥檓 a grandma! Sometimes, I use this superpower to support our students.
What book or podcast are you enjoying right now?
I love reading and belong to two off-campus book clubs. To celebrate the spooky season, in book club one, we鈥檙e reading Play Nice by Rachel Harrison. In book club two, we鈥檙e reading a sci-fi thriller, Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Both are really great reads!
What is the last concert you attended?
My husband and I saw Chicago at the Hollywood Bowl in September.
