Malcolm was planning to write a book during the final year of his life. His central argument was that we need to get greener faster – that it is only by raising the bar for green innovation that we will achieve technological progress at the pace necessary for addressing today’s environmental challenges. Malcolm was a true visionary and a dear friend.

When I joined the Harvey Mudd Board of Trustees in 2009 at the tender age of 28, Malcolm was one of the few members with whom I instantly felt a connection. He had a way of putting people at ease, which was exactly what I needed that year to calm my nerves as both the youngest and newest member of the board. His warmth and cheerful manner made me feel welcome in a way that no other trustee did, and for that I am very thankful.

I met Malcolm Lewis when he visited China in 2009. At that time, China’s green building was in its infancy. There were technical, personnel training and marketing difficulties to overcome. Malcolm visited because I and a small part of the firm believed young people in China were willing to engage in green building. Since then, the spirit and enthusiasm of Malcolm has promoted the green building progress of China.

Malcolm left us, but his spirit of enthusiasm will continue in China and continues to change the face of this country.

As remarked repeatedly by all who knew him, Malcolm was truly a Great and Gentle Giant. Certainly he would disavow being a “giant brain” (during our first years the popular term for that new-fangled gadget, the computer) initially always claiming he was outclassed by his classmates — despite having one of the highest GPAs of us all. In reality he was merely being a careful, a thoughtful and ultimately a truly wise person who approached the problems and people of the world with a great brain, an even greater heart and the greatest of humility in all he did. At our ages it’s becoming all too frequent, but this year I’ve bid farewell to three of my heroes: Joe Platt, my father, and now — far to soon — my favorite Gentle Giant. Goodbye, Malcolm, you will be missed by many.

Malcolm has been one of my very best friends since I met him for the first time in February of 1989. We met each other on the phone through a mutual friend and we agreed to meet in his office a few days later. During our meeting, he decided to engage my services in the area of business management. We developed an almost immediate bond that lasted all of these years. It was a bond that grew as we shared in some challenging events that year and over the next ten years.

I have always admired Malcolm immensely and through the years described him to others by telling them how extremely intelligent he is. I would tell them how he was a registered professional engineer in three different disciplines while reminding them that most engineers would be ecstatic to be registered in just one discipline. I would tell them of his positions as a member of the Board of Directors of three very impressive organizations: the World Green Building Counsel, the Orange County Rescue Mission, and the ��Ƶ and that he received his PhD in engineering from Dartmouth College. Then I would tell them how accomplished he was in his profession and how successful his company was and the many important projects he completed. Most importantly, I would tell them what a lovable and warm hearted man that he was and what a good friend he was to me.

Over the years Malcolm comes to mind often and one of those times is when I make coffee in the morning. We had the same brewing system, a coffee press, and I always seem to visualize him making coffee for us when we were visiting him and Cindy. I think that he comes to mind then because he was always such a gracious and attentive host, always wanting to make sure you were comfortable.

Although Malcolm wasn’t a golfer, he very much enjoyed the few times that we played together. The last time we played we spent some time in the golf course restaurant afterward and shared thoughts about life. Although I wasn’t ill, I told him that I was ready for the Lord to take me home and Malcolm was somewhat saddened at the remark. But I assured him that I wasn’t asking the Lord to come and get me but that if he wanted me, I was OK with it. The memory of that conversation was with me as I prayed last week. I thanked the Lord for receiving Malcolm to His side and that I knew Malcolm was welcomed with a big hug. It would have been the kind of warm hug that always came from Malcolm. Hugs that I will deeply miss!

There are many things that will forever warm my heart about Malcolm and I’m so grateful to both he and Cindy for the kindred spirit they shared with us. To Cindy, Holly, Geoffrey, and the rest of the family, thank you for your friendship, we love your so much and we express our deepest sympathy. Our thoughts and prayers will be for your strength, peace and comfort.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, once again thank Him for His love for Malcolm and for all of us.

I had the privilege of working with Malcolm for many years at RBF and knowing him for many years after we both moved on to other opportunities. Malcolm was a true leader in sustainable design, and was the first to get me interested in the field. His consistent leadership, irrepressible smile, and thoughtful comments showed me which path to follow at many times in my life. I was very sorry to hear of his premature passing, but know in my heart that it was a life well lived.

I’ve always felt Malcolm’s presence regardless of the distance or time or distance that separated us. His warmth and compassion was ever present. In the 80’s we co-presented a series of effective strategies for architects to incorporate energy and environmental efficiencies in their projects starting with the Program and continuing into Construction Administration of each built environment. Malcolm had a wonderful gift to help architects and often their clients see the future while introducing often simple procedures, formulations that were new to most of us and often extraordinarily effective. In a short amount of time Constructive Technologies was the ‘go-to’ Engineering firm for so many seeking insights and design protocols for projects desires of ‘making a difference’.

Malcolm and Cindy were “ment to be”…..They individually expressed how blessed they were to be married and how much each day was brighter than they had ever imagined. Returning from their wedding surrounded by family and friends in a Wine Country historic church, they exemplified how a loving couple can outreach to others and take on each day with a wonderful optimism and belief in what and why they were together…..and what they could accomplish on behalf of our society and our world.

What Malcolm accomplished in all of his career and life was extraordinary; how he did it and how he made people feel around him was super extraordinary.
It feels too wrong that he is gone so soon. What we do have left however, is to be inspired by his work and motivated to live up to his example. Our individual experiences with him are memories of being lifted up to higher expectations and carrying forth on higher planes of interaction. And although our hearts ache with the sadness of his not being around to create more memories, the ripples of his remembered goodness will carry on within our spirits.

Malcolm was like a father to me… And the sorrow of hearing him depart this world is the heartbreak that comes when one loses a father.

Malcolm’s heart is like an infinite ocean of kindness. I called him back in 2006 from Sweden, barely able to present myself or why I’m calling, and having a name that did not ring well everywhere at the time. Despite my terrible presentation over the phone, I managed to ask if I could do my Master’s thesis with his company, certain that he would say no, he took me in open arms.

I had no idea what to expect when arriving at CTG but to my amazement I was greeted to a warm family. Never before and never after my time at CTG, have I experienced anything like it. I came to love everyone and everything about CTG. Still do this day, CTG and its memories is where I draw my strength and energy. The more I questioned myself on why I felt such joy in going to work, to more my esteem and love for Malcolm grew. I realized that it was no coincidence that we CTGers bonded the way we did. It was all carefully directed and instilled with the spirit of CTG’s leadership, with Malcolm at the helm of the ship.

Even though Malcolm was one of the busiest leaders in the industry, he always made time for us. I could always knock on his door and was always greeted by his warm smile. What is even more remarkable, Malcolm cared for us on a personal level. He would ask me about my family, living conditions, and would kindly even offer solutions that go above and beyond what anyone in his position would offer to do. He genuinely cared.

This week has been unbearably hard on me. I miss so much. I had so much to talk with him about. I wanted to thank him again for changing everything about life, and I wanted his visionary advice on how we could save the world together in the near future.

Knowing that he is always here, always makes time for me despite being busy in his new efforts in providing thought leadership in making heaven an even better and more sustainable place, I did speak with him at length.

I will always try to learn from what Malcolm taught me, and to inspire others with that same humane and courageous spirit. My support and prayers, along with the support and prayers of everyone who loved Malcolm, goes out to Malcolm’s family, in particular to his dear wife Cindy, and his beloved son Geoff.

Malcolm, thanks for everything, looking forward to catching up with you again.

Malcom Lewis, a man I have known for over 25 yrs. I did not know him because of ��Ƶ, I did not know him because ofhis brilliant work in the “green field”. I knew him because he was married to my best friend, Cindy Lewis. Yes, my husband worked with Malcolm first and that is how we were introduced to the family. We became quick friends. We had boys similar in age and we just connected with them. I can remember days at the lake and the beach with our families.I remember holidays that we were just accepted as part of their family. We know their children, grandchildren and their parents. Our friendship spans across years of time. We love this family! Malcolm had a heart even bigger than himself. He is one of the kindest, most generous persons Ihave ever had the privilege of knowing. He truly demonstrated what a real “Christian” is. He will be missed for so many reasons, his great mind, his generous spirit, his sweet and kind way to all, his genuine love for his family and most of all for his love for his Lord. Malcolm my dear friend I truly miss you but know I can rejoice that I will see you again. Praying God’s protection and comfort for your family until we meet again.
