Sometimes a school will host its own fair, but more often a group of local schools or an entire school district will coordinate a college fair together at a central site. As many as a hundred or as few as twenty colleges might be present and you can expect students with a wide variety of interests to attend. Each college will typically be given their own table or will be occasionally asked to share with another institution. The vast majority of college fair tables are arranged in alphabetical order, so be prepared to spend some time next to Hampden Sydney, Hartwick, Haverford, and yes, Harvard. You’ll notice that we often don’t have all of the very fancy table displays that you may see on some displays. Typically, our tables are more understated, but please let us know if there are additional resources that you would find helpful.

For many students and families, college fairs may be their first step into the college search process, and it’s common for students to feel overwhelmed and not sure what to do. Students will often share that they haven’t heard about Harvey Mudd but have some basic questions. This is often where representatives at college fairs can put a student at ease by asking the student a question. We often start with “Do you know what you might want to study?” If the student answers something in the ÎÞÓÇÊÓƵ fields, we can go more deeply. If not, it’s a great chance to talk about the other Claremont Colleges!

We are proud of the fact that both Harvey Mudd and our Office of Admission and Financial Aid have a reputation of being accessible and welcoming. As noted above, this can be a stressful process for families, and we hope that our representatives will do all they can to help put families at ease. We hope that each interaction with families – whether it’s 30 seconds or 3 minutes – will leave families feeling reassured and impressed with Harvey Mudd and its people, regardless of whether they decide that Mudd is for them.

While some students will ask general questions, others will ask more pointed ones. You will likely also meet parents who have questions and concerns of their own. In addition to the typical Do’s and Don’ts, as you answer questions, we encourage you to share your own stories (acknowledging that some aspects of the college may have changed) including how your HMC education has shaped your current life and work. One of the best things about representing Harvey Mudd is that we do not try to be everything to everyone, so don’t worry if we don’t have every program or resource that a student wants.

More than anything, we hope that you enjoy your chance to interact with our prospective students and families at college fairs and enjoy sharing your HMC experience. When in doubt, refer them to our office if they have additional questions!

College fairs have become an increasingly important part of our office’s recruitment strategy. Since we have a smaller staff than […]

["post-10171","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
