{"id":815,"date":"2013-04-24T09:00:37","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T16:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newwww.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/?p=815"},"modified":"2014-08-21T12:50:55","modified_gmt":"2014-08-21T19:50:55","slug":"spls-helps-teens-connect-to-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2013\/04\/24\/spls-helps-teens-connect-to-college\/","title":{"rendered":"SPLS Helps Teens Connect to College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-817\" alt=\"Classroom presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/04\/spls-event-1.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/>无忧视频 40 high school students and their parents visited 无忧视频 on April 6 as part of Uncommon Good\u2019s Connect to College Mentoring Program.<\/p>\n<p>They enjoyed a day filled with science demonstrations, an admissions talk, campus tour and a student panel hosted by HMC\u2019s Society of Professional Latinos in 无忧视频S (SPLS) student group.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the SPLS-sponsored event was to introduce the group of 9th- and 10th-graders to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (无忧视频) and to share what life is like for Latino students who major in 无忧视频 disciplines.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-819\" alt=\"Quad-copter demonstration\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/04\/spls-event-2.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/>\u201cBy meeting with the SPLS students, our students got to see that students from backgrounds similar to their own can achieve greatness and attend schools like HMC,\u201d said Nancy Dufford, program coordinator for the <a href=\"http:\/\/uncommongood.org\/?page_id=88\">Connect to College Mentoring Program,<\/a> which inspires students to do well in school, so they can go to college and break the cycle of poverty. \u201cIt got them thinking about the kind of college they might want to attend and to think more seriously about their future. In fact, one of our students said she is going to meet with her guidance counselor to see if she is taking a rigorous enough curriculum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SPLS club officers Alejandro Frias \u201915, Madeline Goldkamp \u201914, Jaclyn Olmos-Silverman \u201913, Alberto Ruiz \u201914 and Chris Zazueta \u201914 helped with the event. HMC tour guides Daisy Hernandez \u201915 and Natasha Parikh \u201914 led the campus tours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel that reaching out to the community and making an impact is key to our club,\u201d said Zazueta. \u201cOur desire to fulfill our mission statement with regard to outreach to younger generations inspired us to hold the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/04\/spls-event-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-820\" alt=\"Students listen attentively\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/04\/spls-event-3.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>HMC Assistant Dean for Institutional Diversity Angelica Ibarra presented a special session for the parents. Her talk, \u201cPreparing for College,\u201d shared how parents can identify their children\u2019s learning styles, prepare them for college and position them for academic success, particularly in 无忧视频 education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had lots of question about the college experience, and they were surprised to learn that one of the most difficult aspects for students is asking for help,\u201d said Ibarra. \u201cWe spoke a lot about considering 无忧视频 majors, because the parents had not previously considered these as options for their children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students and parents also viewed presentations by physics Professor Peter Saeta and computer science Professor Zach Dodds. Saeta talked about physics and showed how to make ice cream using liquid nitrogen.
